Should you buy a daycare franchise or an independent centre?

A daycare franchise offers a brand, a curriculum and training, in return for fees, territory limits and the franchisor’s approval of you as owner. An independent centre gives you freedom and your own parent relationships, but you build the program and the name. Ask the licensing regulator what applies in either case.

Both routes lead to the same place: a licensed centre with children, families and a team of educators. What differs is who supplies the system around you. A franchisor offers one ready-made. An independent owner builds or inherits one. The better fit depends on your experience, how much structure you want and how you feel about answering to someone else.

What a franchise brings

A franchised centre may offer a recognized name, a set curriculum, staff training, purchasing support and marketing. That can help a first-time owner who has not run a centre before. Ask what is included, what you still have to pay for yourself, and how the franchisor supports a centre that is struggling. The Canadian Franchise Association explains how franchising works.

What it asks of you

Expect fees, required standards and limits on your territory. The franchisor may need to approve you as buyer, and the agreement may set its own renewal and exit terms. Have your lawyer read it, ask what franchise disclosure applies where the centre is, and confirm with the child care regulator what a change of owner means for the licence.

What an independent centre keeps

An owner-run centre sets its own program, schedule and culture, and the relationships with parents and staff belong to the centre. The cost is that you carry every decision yourself. See buying an existing daycare or opening a new one and what to check before buying a daycare.
