Should I buy an interior design business or start one?
Buying an existing interior design studio can give you clients, referral partners, trade accounts, a portfolio and trained staff, but how much transfers depends on how much the founder’s name is the brand. Starting fresh costs time but carries no inherited obligations. Compare what you would actually receive with what you can build.
Both routes can work, and neither is right for everyone. Buying a studio shortens the road to a client list and a body of finished work. Starting one lets you choose your own clients and style without inheriting anyone else’s commitments. The useful question is how much of what the studio has would still be there once the founder steps away.
What an existing studio can give you
A working studio may come with past clients who return, builders and realtors who refer, a portfolio of finished rooms, supplier relationships and staff who already know the routine. These are real advantages, and they take years to build. Each one deserves a check, however, because they do not always pass to a new owner on their own.
When the founder’s name is the brand
If clients hire the studio because of one person’s taste, much of its appeal may leave with them. Ask the founder how long they will stay, who the clients trust beyond them and whether a senior designer could lead projects. A longer handover helps. A weak one leaves you with a name and a portfolio you may not be able to build on.
What starting fresh costs
Starting new means building referrals, a portfolio and supplier accounts from nothing. It also means no inherited deposits, disputes or leases. Many people weigh how long they can go without steady work. A similar comparison in web design covers the same trade-off in another field.
Questions to ask yourself
- Which of the studio’s clients and partners would stay with me?
- Can I do the design work myself, or would I hire it?
- What obligations come with the studio that I would not carry if I started new?
- How long could I fund a slower start?
