How can I tell if a vegan cafe for sale is profitable?
Match the sales records to bank deposits, compare specialty ingredient and milk-alternative costs with menu prices, see how much revenue depends on delivery apps or one loyal group, and ask about the owner’s unpaid hours. Ask your accountant to review the figures before you rely on them.
A cafe’s profit is a mix of what comes in, what goes out and how many hours the owner quietly puts in. A plant-based cafe adds a few features of its own. These checks will help you build a picture, but they do not give a verdict. Your accountant can read the statements with you and tell you what they show.
Do the sales match the deposits?
Ask for point-of-sale reports for a full year and compare them with bank deposits and card processor statements. Differences can have simple explanations, such as cash tips or gift cards, but ask the seller to explain each one. Also ask how sales move through the seasons, since a cafe near a campus or office can look very different in different months.
Ingredient and milk-alternative costs
Plant-based milks, nut products and specialty items can cost more than their dairy equivalents, and prices change. Compare recent supplier invoices with the menu and ask how the owner sets prices. If the menu has not changed in a long time, ask whether costs have moved since. Ask also about waste, because short-dated specialty items can spoil.
Delivery apps and a loyal community
Find out what share of sales comes from delivery platforms and what each platform keeps. Then ask how much comes from a small group of regulars, a standing event or the owner’s own social media following. A following is an asset, but it may not follow a new owner unless the handover is handled with care.
The owner’s unpaid hours
Ask how many hours the owner works, in which roles, and what it would cost to hire someone to do that work. Ask whether the owner took a wage, and what a manager would have cost. See how to value a hospitality business for how that adjustment is usually discussed.
