How can a web studio’s senior developer take over from the owner?

A strong developer is not automatically ready to run a studio. Test the fit with sales, pricing, client relationships and cash handling before any agreement. Agree how the purchase is funded and what the owner does in the transition, and put the arrangement in writing with a lawyer.

Developers are often the heart of a studio, but running one is a different job. Ask the senior developer to take on parts of the owner’s work for a trial period: quoting, speaking to difficult clients, hiring, collections. Some will thrive, some will discover they prefer the craft. Better to learn that early and together.

Money comes next. A developer often has limited savings, so the question is how a purchase would be paid for. Explore whether the owner would accept payments over time, whether a lender would be involved, and whether the developer might buy gradually. If a lender is involved, expect it to ask for records and plans. Your accountant should model the cash.

Plan the handover itself. Decide which clients the owner introduces and when, who keeps the relationship with the largest accounts, and how long the owner stays to advise. Put the terms in writing, with roles and exit dates. Everyone in the studio should know the plan before it begins, so the team does not guess. Also ask the clients. Some will be glad to see a familiar developer take charge; others may want reassurance about sales and project management. Their reaction tells you how much of the owner’s role has to be rebuilt.

Key takeaways

  • Give the developer owner-level tasks for a trial period before committing.
  • Work out how the purchase is paid for before agreeing a price.
  • Set roles, introductions and the owner’s exit date in writing.
