How do I find a cidery for sale in Canada?
Cideries are often listed under winery, farm, orchard or agri-tourism rather than under their own heading, and some come bundled with land. Search several category words, ask whether the orchard, the brand or only the equipment is for sale, and ask whom the broker acts for before you share your plans.
Cideries rarely appear under a tidy “cidery” heading. The search is part listing sites and part conversation with people in the fruit and drinks trade. Start by deciding what you want: a tasting room with a loyal local following, a brand sold in stores, or a working orchard with a press attached.
Search under the words owners use
A listing may say cidery, cider house, craft beverage producer, winery, orchard, farm gate, agri-tourism or hard cider. Try each on the main business-for-sale sites and set alerts so new listings reach you quickly. Some cideries are advertised as farms with a business attached, so read farm and land listings too. Our guide to buying a winery shows how closely related producers are listed.
Ask what is actually for sale
One cider business may include the orchard, the press, the building and the brand. Another may be only a brand and a set of recipes, or only the tanks and equipment. Ask early whether the land is included, whether the fruit is grown on site or bought from neighbours, and whether any of it is leased. Ask your lawyer who must agree to the sale.
Ask whom the broker acts for
Brokers are a good route into this niche, and many know which producers are quietly thinking of selling. Ask whether the broker acts for the seller, for you, or for both, and get that in writing before you share financial details. Also approach growers, equipment suppliers and tasting-room staff, who often hear first. An owner who has not listed may still talk privately.
- Is the orchard, the brand or only the equipment included?
- Where does the fruit come from, and is that supply under contract?
- Does the tasting room belong to the business or to a landlord?
- Will the owner stay on to teach the first season?
