How do I find a fish market or seafood store for sale?

Search listings under the names owners use (fish market, seafood store, fishmonger, fish shop), then talk to seafood wholesalers and distributors, who know which shops are changing hands. Retail fish shops are few and often sell by word of mouth, so let people in the trade know what you want.

Owners tend to know their wholesalers, and their wholesalers know the owners. That makes the supply chain a useful place to ask. Public listings still matter, but they are only part of the picture, so plan on searching in more than one way.

Try the different names

A shop may be posted as a fish market, seafood market, seafood store, fishmonger or fish and chips counter with a retail case. Some are filed under specialty food or general retail. Search each name, and read the descriptions of food shops with a display case, since the listing may mention seafood only in passing. Save the searches so new postings reach you.

Talk to wholesalers and distributors

Seafood wholesalers deliver to shops every week and see how each one is doing. A driver or sales rep may know that an owner is ready to step back. Introduce yourself, say what you are looking for, and ask them to pass your name on. They will not share private details, but a call from the owner to you is a good result.

Visit and ask directly

Shop at the stores you like for a few weeks. Learn what sells, who works the counter and how busy it gets. Then tell the owner you are looking to buy a seafood business and ask whether they would talk, now or later.

Questions for a first conversation

  • Why is the owner selling, and how soon?
  • Who buys the fish, and who cuts it?
  • Which wholesalers supply the shop, and for how long?
  • Would the owner stay for a handover period?
