How do I find a successor who can coach my chess club’s top players?

Decide whether you need one person who both runs the club and coaches, or two people. Describe what top players need, look for candidates through chess circles as well as listings, and have each one lead a real session before you commit.

Write down what coaching your best players actually receive: how often, in what format, and with what style. Be honest about whether students come for the club, or for you. That tells you how much of the value a successor must replace and how much stays with the organization.

Search where chess people are. Ask other coaches, tournament organizers and parents for introductions, and mention the opening in your listing so qualified buyers know what the job involves. A broker can help screen applicants, but coaching skill is best judged by watching it happen in a room.

Invite candidates to lead a session or review games with a few students. Afterward, ask the students and their parents how it went. Strong players notice quickly whether a coach can explain, motivate and push them, and their reaction is better evidence than a résumé. If no single person fits, consider a split: a new owner who manages the club and a hired coach for the top group. Introduce the successor gradually, with joint sessions so students can transfer their trust, and tell families openly how long you will stay.

Key takeaways

  • Define what your top players get from you before you start searching.
  • Watch candidates coach a real session and collect feedback from students and parents.
  • Consider separating the owner role from the head coach role if one person cannot do both.
