How do I find a tree service business for sale?
Tree service companies are found through business brokers, listing sites such as Deavo, and direct approaches to owners, often through suppliers and equipment dealers. When you read a listing, look past the headline to the size of the crews, the equipment and the mix of one-off and repeat work.
A tree service is a crew business built around heavy equipment and a few skilled climbers. Owners often sell quietly, because they do not want customers or staff to worry. A search for “tree service business for sale” may therefore show only a handful of results. It helps to work several routes at the same time and to know what you are looking for before you call anyone.
Brokers and listing sites
Business brokers hold some sales that are never posted. Tell a few of them what you want: removal, pruning or stump work, the size of crew you can manage and how far you will travel. Listing sites show the owners who are openly for sale, so check them often. BDC’s advice on working with a broker is a good starting point.
Approaching owners directly
Equipment dealers, chipper and truck suppliers, and local landscapers often know which owner is tired or thinking of retiring. Ask them for an introduction rather than a name. A short, confidential letter can also open a conversation. Say who you are, what you are looking for and that you will keep it private. Expect many no replies and some owners who need a year to decide.
Reading what a listing tells you
- How many crews work, and how many of the climbers are employees rather than the owner.
- The equipment list: trucks, chippers, lifts and grinders, and how old each one is.
- The mix of homeowner calls, repeat property managers and municipal or utility contracts.
- Whether the owner does the quoting, and what the reason for sale says about that.
A listing is only a starting summary. Once you have a candidate, move to the checks in how to prepare a landscaping company for handover, which shows what a seller should be able to hand over, and line up your financing early with how much cash you need to buy a business.
