How do I hand over my hair salon to the new owner?

Plan the handover as a series of introductions and transfers. After signing, introduce the buyer to clients and stylists, pass on colour formula cards and client notes once your lawyer confirms the consent questions, move the booking system and retail stock across, and agree how long you will work alongside the buyer.

Signing the agreement is not the end of your part. Salon clients return to a particular chair and stylist, so plan how they hear about the change. Agree the plan with the buyer before closing day, and write it down.

Introduce the buyer to people

Decide with the buyer how and when to tell stylists and clients. Consider telling staff first, in person, with the buyer present if possible. For clients, a short, friendly message and a few days of the buyer being visible at the front desk go further than a long announcement.

Client notes and colour formulas

Colour formula cards and client notes are what keep a service consistent. They also contain personal information. Ask your lawyer to confirm any notice or consent obligations before the notes pass to the buyer, and what the sale agreement should say about them. Our page on who owns clients when you buy a hair salon gives the buyer’s side.

Booking system, retail stock and working alongside

Check whether your booking system account can move to the buyer, and list the retail products on hand, including any brand lines that need a supplier’s approval for a new owner. Consider staying on for an agreed period to answer questions and reassure clients. Put the length and your duties in writing.

  • A joint plan for telling stylists and clients
  • A lawyer-approved approach to client notes
  • Booking system and supplier accounts moved over
  • An agreed period of working alongside the buyer
