How do I tell my graphic design clients that I am selling the studio?

Tell your largest clients personally and early enough that the news does not reach them second-hand. Say who the new owner is, what stays the same, and who they will contact. Agree the timing of the announcement with the buyer first.

Start by deciding the order. Your closest and largest clients should hear from you directly, by phone or in person, before any general email. Smaller accounts can get a short, warm note. Nobody should learn about the sale from a supplier or from social media.

Timing matters. Many sales require confidentiality until the deal is firm, so check what your agreement with the buyer allows and agree the wording together. Telling clients too early can unsettle them and jeopardize the deal. Telling them too late can feel like a betrayal. Prepare your message around what clients care about: will the same people do the work, will their files and brand guidelines be safe, will the process and pricing stay stable? Be honest about anything that will change, and do not promise what the buyer has not agreed to. Where it helps, introduce the new owner in person, or in a joint call, and stay available for a transition period.

Afterwards, keep notes on each client’s reaction. Their questions will tell you what to cover in the handover, and the buyer will want to know which relationships need extra attention.

Key takeaways

  • Tell the largest clients personally, before any broad announcement goes out.
  • Agree timing and wording with the buyer, and respect any confidentiality terms first.
  • Explain who they will deal with, what stays the same and what changes.
