How does a barbershop make money?
A barbershop earns from services such as cuts and shaves, from chair rent when barbers work for themselves, and from selling products. Walk-in and booked trade can both feed these streams. A buyer should find out which ones the shop relies on, because each leaves a different trail in the books.
Two barbershops can look alike from the street and earn their money very differently. One may keep everything clients pay for services and pay its barbers a share. Another may collect rent from barbers who run their own books. Before you read any numbers, learn which model the shop uses, since the same revenue line can mean quite different things.
Services paid by the client
Cuts, shaves and beard work are the core. When the shop keeps this income, the books show it as sales and show the barbers’ pay as a cost, whether wages or a share of each service. Ask how the owner’s own chair is counted, because an owner who cuts hair all week is earning wages as well as profit.
Chair rent
Some shops let barbers rent a chair and keep what they earn. The shop’s income is then the rent, and its costs are lower. Ask to see each rental agreement. Find out who holds the clients, who sets the prices and whether any barber could leave and take their trade with them.
Products and the walk-in mix
Pomade, oils and tools are a smaller stream, but they say something about how clients treat the shop. Look at how much trade is walk-in and how much is booked. Walk-ins depend on location and hours. Bookings depend on the barbers. Each tells you what a new owner must protect.
