How does escrow work when buying or selling a YouTube channel?

In a channel sale, escrow means a neutral third party holds the buyer’s funds while the seller transfers ownership of the channel and its linked accounts. The buyer checks that they have full control during an agreed inspection window. The funds are usually released to the seller once the buyer confirms the handover is complete, on the terms in the written agreement.

A channel cannot be handed over the way a shop can, with keys passed across a counter. The seller gives up control through account settings, and the buyer cannot be sure it worked until they have tried it. Escrow fills that gap. A neutral party holds the money until both sides have done their part. It does not replace a written agreement, so the two work together.

The usual sequence

The buyer and seller sign an agreement that describes exactly what is being sold. The buyer then places the funds with the escrow holder. Once the holder confirms the funds are secure, the seller starts the handover. The buyer inspects what they received, and if everything matches the agreement, the holder releases the money. Ask who the holder is, how they are paid and whether they are independent of both parties.

What the seller hands over

List every item. That usually means the channel itself, the brand account that owns it, sponsor contacts, the email address tied to the channel, and any raw footage or editing files. Moving ownership is not the same as sharing a password, so ask how each item will change hands and what the buyer will hold at the end. A sale of the channel alone leaves the sponsor relationships behind. The ad revenue account is not transferred: it stays with the seller, and the buyer links the channel to an account of their own.

The inspection window

The buyer needs time to confirm they have full control. They should check that the seller no longer has access, that ad revenue now goes to their own account and that the channel’s history matches what was described. Agree on how long the window lasts, what counts as a problem and what happens if one is found.

What each side should insist on

  • The buyer should insist that funds stay in escrow until control is confirmed.
  • The seller should insist that the funds are in escrow before anything is transferred.
  • Both should insist on a written list of what is transferring and when.
  • Both should keep records of every step.

Be careful with unsolicited offers and with escrow services you cannot verify. Fake escrow websites are a known way to take money from one side of a sale, and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre takes reports of fraud.
