How does a used car lot make its money?
A used car lot earns from selling vehicles after reconditioning, from finance and warranty products sold with them, from trade-ins and wholesale disposals, and sometimes from service work. Each stream appears in different records, so a buyer should read them separately.
A lot’s revenue line says little on its own. Selling a car looks like one event, but several kinds of income sit inside it, and they behave differently. When you read a lot’s books, ask the seller to separate them. That shows what the business depends on and which parts would stay if the owner left.
Vehicle sales after reconditioning
The first stream is the gap between what the lot paid for a car and what it sold for, once the cost of cleaning, repairs and safety work is added. Records to ask for are the purchase invoice, the repair orders for each car and the sale contract. Check that reconditioning costs are tied to the car, not lumped into general expenses.
Finance and warranty products
Many lots earn from arranging customer financing and from selling warranty or protection plans. These usually show as separate line items or as commissions from the lender or provider. Ask which lenders the lot uses, how those arrangements are paid and whether they depend on the owner’s personal relationships. Your lawyer can tell you which agreements can be assigned.
Trade-ins, wholesale and service
Trade-ins feed the stock, and cars that do not suit the lot may go to auction or other dealers. That income can swing from month to month, so read it across a long period. Some lots also run a small service bay. If so, ask whether it earns its keep or mainly supports retail sales, and where it appears in the accounts.
Reading the records together
Match the sales contracts to the bank deposits and the inventory list. If the three do not agree, ask why. Your accountant can build the picture from there. For how another dealer type earns, see how a farm equipment dealership makes its money.
