How long should a pharmacy seller stay after the sale?

Long enough for patients, prescribers, suppliers and the dispensary team to get to know the buyer, and no longer than the buyer needs. Many agreements set an end date with a way to extend it. Ask the pharmacy regulator who must serve as pharmacy manager, and have your lawyer write the stay into the agreement.

Patients come back because they know the person at the counter, and prescribers send them there for the same reason. When ownership changes, the seller’s time at the pharmacy is how that trust is passed along. The right length depends on the buyer’s experience, the size of the team and how much of the business rests on the seller. How long a transition lasts gives the general picture.

Working shifts alongside the buyer

A seller may keep working shifts at first, then reduce them. Overlap lets patients see both faces together, and lets the buyer ask questions while the answer is at hand. Agree the schedule in advance, and who makes decisions on a shift.

Patients, prescribers and suppliers

Introduce the buyer to regular patients at the counter and to the local prescribers and care homes you work with. Walk the buyer through the front shop, ordering routines and supplier contacts, and the habits that keep the shelves and the workflow steady.

The dispensary team

Technicians and assistants watch closely for signs of change. The seller’s presence reassures them, and the buyer learns who does what. Meet with the team together, and explain what stays the same.

Writing the stay into the agreement

Ask your lawyer to set out how long you will stay, what you will do, how you are paid and how either side can end the arrangement early. Ask the pharmacy regulator who must serve as the pharmacy manager, and whether your role affects that. See the guide to selling a pharmacy for the broader steps.
