How can I tell if a hobby shop for sale is profitable?
Judge a hobby shop by checking how much of its stock actually sells, which sales come from special orders, clubs and events, how much depends on online channels, and how many hours the owner works. Compare the seller’s statements with bank deposits, supplier invoices and the inventory count, and have your accountant review them.
Check whether a busy shop’s sales leave anything after costs. Shelves of kits, paint and parts tie up cash, and some of that stock may be years old. Before you trust any profit statement, learn where the money comes from and what the owner does all week. The checks below are things to verify with documents, not conclusions you can reach from a visit to the shop.
Look hard at the inventory
Ask for an item-level stock list with purchase dates. Discontinued kits, unpainted models and old parts may sell slowly or not at all, yet sit on the books at full cost. Ask how the owner counts them and whether any have been written down. Your accountant can tell you how the shop’s method affects its reported results. BDC describes what inventory is in plain terms.
Separate the kinds of revenue
Ask for sales split into walk-in purchases, special orders, club or league fees, event entries, repairs or assembly work, and online orders. Special orders may be prepaid, which changes the cash picture. Events can bring people in without lifting sales. Ask which streams the owner built personally and which would carry on after a sale.
Test the owner’s role and online channels
Find out how many hours the owner works and what tasks only the owner does. If you would need to hire a manager, the numbers change. Ask which marketplaces or web stores the shop sells through, who holds those accounts, and whether the fees and shipping costs show up in the statements.
