Is buying a tow truck different from buying a towing company?
Yes. A tow truck is an asset: it can tow, but it brings no calls. A towing company is an operating business with dispatch accounts, motor-club and commercial relationships, a yard, drivers and its permits. Confirm which of those actually transfer, because the truck alone does not carry them.
The two purchases share a name and little else. Buying a truck gets you a machine you can use or resell. Buying a towing company gets you a stream of work and the obligations that come with it. Before you decide which you are shopping for, be clear about what you want the purchase to do for you.
What a truck gives you
A used tow truck is judged like other heavy equipment: age, use, condition, repair history and whether anyone holds a lender’s security interest in it. An inspection by a qualified mechanic is a reasonable step. The truck does not bring customers or drivers, and operating authority depends on the province, so confirm it with a lawyer. See equipment financing compared with a term loan.
What a company gives you
An operating company may hold dispatch work from motor clubs, police rotations, insurers and commercial accounts, along with a yard, drivers and customer goodwill. Each is a separate question. Ask which accounts are in writing, which depend on the owner’s relationships, and which could end when ownership changes.
Confirm what actually transfers
Ask the seller to list every account, permit, certificate and yard arrangement, and ask each counterparty or authority how it treats a change of owner. Your lawyer can tell you what applies to the business you are considering. The towing due diligence guide lists more areas to check.
