Should I buy a junk removal business or start one?
Weigh what an existing junk removal business hands you, such as trucks, reviews, repeat accounts and a trained crew, against what you would have to build yourself. Starting means building customers from nothing. Buying may bring existing customers, and the cost depends on the deal. Which fits depends on your money, time and skills.
Junk removal is a low-barrier trade. You can begin with a truck and a phone number, which is why it is a real question whether to buy at all. It is what you would have to build against what an existing business already has in place, and how long each path takes.
What an existing business can transfer
A running operation may come with trucks and trailers, a website with a search history, online reviews, relationships with property managers and realtors, disposal accounts, and a crew that knows the work. Not all of it moves automatically. Ask what the sale will actually include and put it in writing.
What starting asks of you
Starting means finding your own truck, setting up insurance and accounts, building a website, collecting your first reviews and earning each early customer from scratch. You keep control and avoid paying for what you do not want. The tradeoff is time, and the early months can be uneven while the phone is quiet.
Questions to settle first
- How much can you invest, and how would you finance a purchase?
- Do you want to work on the truck yourself, or manage a crew?
- Could you learn the trade as a buyer if the seller trains you?
- What would you do with a business whose bookings depend on the owner?
Take the numbers to your advisers
A business plan helps either way. Build one for each path and give both to your accountant and lender. If you do look at a business, the steps to buying apply here as well. Treat the choice as yours; nothing here is a recommendation.
