Should I buy an embroidery franchise or an independent embroidery shop?
A franchise offers a brand, national-account referrals and supplier programs, in exchange for required equipment, fees and the franchisor’s rules. An independent shop gives you freedom and no franchise royalty, but you find your own customers. Weigh the terms with a franchise lawyer before you commit to either.
Branded decorated-apparel and promotional-products franchises exist alongside thousands of independent embroidery and print shops. A buyer comparing the two is really comparing support against freedom. This page lists what to weigh. It does not recommend one. A franchise lawyer should read the actual agreement, and an accountant can help you compare the economics.
Brand and referrals
A known brand can open doors, and some franchisors pass national-account orders to local owners. Ask how those referrals reach you, how they are split between locations, and how often they have arrived in the past. An independent shop has no such channel, so its owner builds each account personally. That can be slower, but the shop keeps the relationships it builds, subject to the purchase agreement.
Suppliers, equipment and territory
Franchisors often require certain machines, software or suppliers. Ask what you must buy, what you may use instead, and who pays when the standard changes. Ask exactly what territory you receive, and whether the franchisor or another franchisee can sell into it. An independent can choose equipment and suppliers freely, and keep any savings that result.
Fees, renewal and resale
Raise fees, renewal terms and the franchisor’s right to approve a buyer with a franchise lawyer before you sign. When you later sell, the approval step may affect timing and who can buy. For a franchise resale, our page on buying a franchise resale shows the kinds of questions to ask, though the trade differs.
