Should I buy an existing kombucha business or start one?

Buying a kombucha business can give you a proven culture and recipes, consistent batches, shelf space, café accounts and a brewing space or co-packer. It can also hand you gaps you cannot see yet. Starting gives you control but no customers on day one. Check the production side first.

Making the same one every batch, getting it onto shelves and keeping it there is the business. That is the main thing to weigh. A new maker pays for that learning in time and spoiled batches. A buyer should check that the processes they are taking over actually work.

What buying can give you

A running business may come with a stable culture, written recipes, a brewing space or a co-packer relationship, and accounts that already reorder. It may also have a brand people recognize. These are hard to build quickly. Ask to watch a full brew cycle and to see how batches are logged, so you know the consistency is real and not remembered by one person.

What you may inherit

Old equipment, a lease that does not suit you, a co-packer who can drop the account, or customers who are loyal to the owner rather than the product. Ask what happens to key accounts if the owner steps back. Look at complaints, returns and any product that was pulled. Your lawyer can review contracts and your accountant the books.

When starting makes more sense

If you want your own recipes, flavours or brand, a new start may suit you better than adapting someone else’s. It lets you choose your own space and suppliers. The cost is time before the first reliable sale. Our page on buying a brewery or starting with used equipment shows the same trade-off for a related drinks business.
