Should I buy a prebuilt Shopify store?
A prebuilt Shopify store is usually a finished set-up, meaning a theme, product listings and apps, with no real trading history behind it. You are buying someone’s setup work, not customers or a supplier record. Ask what is included, what is missing and whether you could build the same thing yourself.
A prebuilt store, sometimes called a premade or turnkey store, is an online shop that has been designed and stocked with products but has not built a real business yet. It looks finished on screen. Whether it is useful to you depends on what you wanted from the purchase.
What a prebuilt store usually includes
Expect a theme, product pages, a logo, a connected payment setup and a handful of apps. Sometimes there is a supplier link or a domain name. Ask for a written list of every item, who holds each login, and which apps carry their own subscriptions. What you are buying is the seller’s set-up work, so ask how long each part took.
What it leaves out
There are typically no repeat customers, no search history, no proven supplier and no record of how orders were handled. Without those, there is nothing to check a claim against. Ask whether any real orders ever went through, and whether the products and photos were the seller’s own or copied from elsewhere.
How it differs from buying a running store
A trading store has order history, customer records and reports you can verify. Our guide to buying a Shopify DTC brand in Canada covers that kind of purchase. A prebuilt store has none of that, so the questions change from “is this real?” to “what exactly is here to build on?”. If a listing calls a store established, check that it is actually trading.
Questions to ask the seller
- Who built it, and will they hand over every account, not just the storefront?
- Are the supplier terms, product images and brand name genuinely the seller’s to transfer?
- Does the transfer follow the platform’s own ownership process?
- What happens if the store does not perform as described?
