Should I buy a water softener dealer or start one?
Buying an in-home water softener dealer gets you an installed base, service customers, a dealer agreement and trained people on day one. Starting gets you a clean slate and no purchase cost, but you build the customer list, the reputation and the manufacturer relationship yourself. Which suits you depends on your skills, savings and patience.
A refill store with a counter is one kind of water business. An in-home dealer is another: it sells, installs and services softeners and filters at customers’ houses, often for years. The buy-or-build question is different for this trade, because most of what a dealer owns sits in other people’s basements. Here are the points to weigh before you decide.
What buying can give you
An existing dealer may come with units already installed, a list of customers who call for service and filter changes, a rental fleet, a dealer agreement with a manufacturer, and installers who know the work. You start with relationships and a rhythm. You also take on the dealer’s past promises, so ask what warranties and service commitments exist and who stands behind them.
What starting asks of you
Starting means earning every customer one at a time. You will need training, a vehicle, stock, insurance and a manufacturer willing to take you on as a dealer. Referrals and reputation take time to grow, and the early months may be thin. In return you choose your brands, your pricing approach and your team without inheriting anyone else’s habits.
How to compare the two honestly
Write down what each path would need from you in money, hours and skills, and where the first customers would come from. Ask your accountant to model both, and ask the lender what it would want to see. If you lack trade experience, buying with a transition period from the seller can lower the learning curve. Our page on whether to buy an existing water store or open a new one covers the retail version of this choice.
