What does an auto detailing business owner do day to day?
Most owners split their week between taking and quoting bookings, scheduling staff, checking finished vehicles, looking after dealer and fleet accounts, and doing hands-on work such as paint correction. Spend a few days shadowing the seller to see which of these you would enjoy and which you would hand off.
Due diligence tells you what a detailing business owns. It does not tell you what the owner does from seven in the morning until the last vehicle leaves. That matters, because you are buying a job as much as an asset. Ask the seller to walk you through an ordinary week and a bad one, and write down each task as they describe it.
The office side
Someone answers messages, builds quotes, books the calendar and chases invoices. In a small shop that someone is the owner, often at night. Ask how long quoting takes, how often customers change their minds, and what happens when a vehicle turns out dirtier than the photos suggested. Notice whether the process is written down or lives in the seller’s head.
On the floor
Owners usually do the most skilled work themselves, such as paint correction or coatings, and check everyone else’s results before the customer sees them. Decide honestly whether you can do this work or want to learn it. If not, ask which employees can, and what it would take to keep them.
Accounts and people
Dealer and fleet customers often call the owner directly. Find out who holds those relationships and whether the seller will introduce you. Staff scheduling, supplies orders and quality complaints round out the week. Our guide to auto detailing due diligence lists what to verify on paper.
