What does running a bed and breakfast involve day to day?

You are the cook, cleaner, host and bookkeeper under one roof. A typical day means early breakfast service, room turnovers, check-ins timed to guests’ arrivals, and guest questions throughout, with guests in your living space and little time off during the busy season.

People often picture a bed and breakfast as a gentle life in a lovely house. It can be, but the work continues through the day. Spend a few days mapping each hour of a full house.

Early mornings and breakfast service

Breakfast sets the day. You shop, prepare and serve it at a time guests choose, handle allergies and special diets, and clean the kitchen afterwards, often before most people are awake. It happens every morning the house is full. Ask the current owners how many people they feed and how they get ready the night before.

Turnovers, laundry and upkeep

Once guests leave, every room is stripped, cleaned, restocked and checked. Laundry builds quickly, so many owners run machines all day. Bathrooms, floors and common areas need attention daily, and the house itself needs repair and seasonal work. Think about who does this when you are ill or away.

Check-ins and living with guests

Guests arrive on their own schedule, so you are the front desk at any hour. You will answer questions about restaurants and routes, take bookings by phone and online, and respond to reviews. Guests share your living space, so privacy takes planning. Decide which rooms are yours and keep them that way.

Time off and help

Busy seasons leave little free time, and a house that cannot be left alone limits holidays. Think about whether you would hire part-time help, who could cover a break and how that would be paid for. Talk to current owners in other places about their year.
