Which brands does an appliance repair technician actually know how to fix?
Ask each technician to list the makes and appliance types they repair regularly, then compare that to completed job records. Skills that appear only in a sales pitch are weaker than brands that show up in the job history, with the parts and training to match.
Start with the job history. Ask for a sample of completed work orders and sort them by brand and appliance type. A technician who claims to handle many makes but whose work orders show a narrow set is telling you where their true experience lies. Note which repairs get sent away or declined and why.
Then ask the technicians themselves. Which brands do they work on most, which do they avoid and who do they call when stuck? Ask how they learned, whether the manufacturers or a trade school trained them and whether the training is current. Many brands update their models, and skills that were solid ten years ago may not cover newer machines with electronic controls.
Finally, think about what happens when a key person leaves. If one technician handles a specialty brand, the business has a dependency a buyer must plan for. Ask about stock of parts, access to service documentation and the supplier relationships that support each brand. Check what turnover has been like on the team, and ask your lawyer about any staff agreements that would carry over. Ask which repairs the shop would refuse today.
