Figures are H&R Block Canada’s own as read on its pages. The franchise page publishes one money figure; the franchise disclosure document governs.

How H&R Block Canada says you become a franchisee

H&R Block Canada’s franchise page describes a structured process. You “Connect with the Franchise Owner listed and negotiate an agreement”, speak with the franchise development team, complete a franchise application “including background checks and financial qualifications”, and take part in a training program while you prepare the location (as published, read Nov 4, 2026). The page invites readers to “Explore the available franchise listings across Canada”. As the page describes it, the route is an agreement with the owner of a listed franchise, followed by H&R Block’s own application, approval and training. The page does not say how the price of a listed franchise is set or what transfer terms apply, so ask both the franchisor and the seller.

The one cost figure it publishes

The page says: “With one of the lowest initial investment costs, you can operate an H&R Block franchise for as little as a $2,500 non-refundable franchise fee.” It adds “you won’t pay any additional costs for national advertising” and that “the expenses of furnishing and running an office are up to you”. It publishes no purchase price for an existing office, no royalty, no local advertising terms, no capital or net-worth requirement and no term. For “more detailed financial information and potential return on investment” it points readers to its franchise development team. Deavo does not give or assess a return; ask for the franchise disclosure document and read the fees in it.

Financing an existing office

The page says Franchise Partner, Inc., an affiliate of H&R Block, offers an annual payments term loan, and that for purchasing an existing H&R Block franchise this financing option is “worth considering”. No rate, term or approval criteria are given on the page. For how Canadian franchise purchases are financed in general, see can a franchise purchase be financed?

Training and company background

The page lists comprehensive training, national advertising campaigns, local marketing tools and digital resources, and names its H&R Block Tax Academy among its training programs. It gives no length for the training. H&R Block Canada’s company page says the business expanded to Canada in 1964, is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, and serves taxpayers “in nearly a 1,000 offices across the country”. The company page does not say how many of those offices are franchised.

Disclosure law and an H&R Block purchase

Seven provinces have a franchise disclosure statute: Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan (in force 30 June 2026). Where an Act applies, late or missing disclosure can give a franchisee a statutory right to rescind, within deadlines the Act sets. A sale by an existing franchisee may be exempt from the disclosure duty in some provinces on conditions the Act lists, so a resale buyer should ask in writing what disclosure will be given; see what disclosure a resale buyer gets and who has to approve a franchise resale.

General information, not legal advice — franchise legislation differs by province and changes over time.
