How a Kumon centre is acquired
Kumon Canada does not sell a franchise first and train afterwards. Its investment page describes an Instructor Development Program that comes before the franchise agreement. A Training Agreement governs its first semester, and for a first centre a $1,000 deposit is applied toward the initial fee if you successfully complete the programme and sign a franchise agreement. The programme combines homework, training in a Kumon centre the company designates, a regional office, online study and two semesters of classroom training, with further courses after an award; the page says the classroom training is at Kumon University in Teaneck, New Jersey, at the trainee’s own travel expense. The page gives no length in weeks or months. Kumon’s FAQ also says opportunities can be to open a new centre or “to take over an existing one”, through an Available Franchise Opportunities list, which Deavo did not read.
What Kumon Canada publishes about cost
The initial franchise fee is $2,000, less the $1,000 deposit for a first centre, and the FAQ adds applicable taxes. A separate $2,000 buys the opening materials (answer books, tests, placement tests and posters). The investment page’s total is $59,415–$155,815, built from line items such as architect design, build-out, furniture, equipment and signage, three months of assistants’ pay and three months of additional funds, and Kumon says its estimates draw on more than 25 years of operating and franchising centres in Canada. Neither page names a currency. Kumon states that within the first eighteen months after opening it will spend $7,650 on digital marketing, promotion and advertising for a new centre, and that Kumon will contribute $3,600 and the instructor $4,050 of their own funds, billed $225 in each month over 18 months; the $4,050 is the “New Centre Marketing” line in the costs table. Neither page read states a royalty or advertising percentage, and so none is recorded here.
Who qualifies
The FAQ capture, from August 2025, says a prospective owner needs a net worth of $150,000 and liquid capital of $70,000, and that a university degree is required. It recommends a retail space of at least 1,000 usable square feet on a lease of at least five years. The investment page adds that where a fingerprint check is required, the consent form, an RCMP form and the processing fee go to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The investment page says the information is not an offer to sell a franchise, and that Kumon offers franchises solely by means of its Franchise Disclosure Document.
Kumon listings on Deavo
Deavo had no Kumon listings on Nov 3, 2026. A resale of a franchised centre may need the franchisor’s consent, which is a question to settle early; see who has to approve a franchise resale and what to know before buying an existing franchise unit. The seller should describe in writing what the centre includes and what transfers to a buyer.
Disclosure law across provinces
Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan (in force 30 June 2026) have franchise disclosure statutes, each with its own deadlines. In Ontario the Arthur Wishart Act requires the prospective franchisee to receive the document not less than 14 days before the earlier of signing the franchise agreement or any other agreement relating to the franchise and paying any consideration relating to it, subject to the exceptions in section 5 (some deposits and some agreements are excluded). Section 5(7) exempts the grant of a franchise by a franchisee only on conditions, including that it is for the franchisee’s own account and not effected by or through the franchisor. Ask your lawyer how your province’s Act applies, particularly to a resale.
