Amusement device licence
An amusement device licence is the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) licence needed in Ontario to operate an amusement business. TSSA says each device or ride also requires its own permit, and that licences are not transferable to a new owner.
An amusement device licence is what TSSA requires an Ontario amusement business to hold before it operates rides or devices. A buyer of an arcade, attraction or escape room and entertainment venue meets it if the venue has regulated devices, so ask what the seller holds.
How TSSA describes it
TSSA’s Amusement Device Safety Program regulates all amusement rides in Ontario and ensures devices conform to the Technical Standards and Safety Act and applicable regulations, codes and standards. TSSA says you need a licence to operate an amusement business, each device or ride requires its own permit, and you must hold a valid licence to obtain a permit. Licence holders must submit an operating schedule for each device. On a sale, TSSA says licences are not transferable and the new owner must apply for a new one.
What to check or ask
- Which devices the business operates and whether each has a current permit.
- Whether operating schedules are filed for each device.
- When the buyer should apply for its own licence, a question for TSSA. See TSSA licence and elevating device licence.
