Buyer persona
A buyer persona is a profile describing a type of prospective buyer — their financing capacity, industry background, preferred deal structure and risk tolerance — used by brokers, platforms and buyers themselves to match likely buyers to specific opportunities and focus outreach where it is most likely to succeed.
A buy box states what a buyer wants; a buyer persona describes who that buyer actually is. Brokers and marketplaces build personas to route listings to buyers most likely to be qualified and interested, instead of broadcasting every opportunity to everyone on a mailing list.
What a buyer persona typically captures
- Financing capacity and likely source of funds — personal capital, a lender, investor backing
- Relevant operating or industry experience, and whether hands-on involvement is expected
- Preferred structure — full buyout, partial investment, or a transition period with the seller staying on
- Timeline and urgency to close
Why it matters to a buyer, not just a seller
A buyer who understands how they are likely being profiled can present themselves more credibly to a broker or seller — leading with financing readiness and relevant experience rather than general interest. It is also the basis on which many matching tools and marketplaces surface opportunities to a buyer in the first place.
