Health inspection report
A health inspection report is the written record of a health inspector’s visit to a food premises; Vancouver Coastal Health says each report either confirms compliance with regulations or lists deficiencies to address. Some health authorities publish the results, so a buyer can read the premises’ history before closing.
Vancouver Coastal Health says its environmental health officers inspect restaurants regularly and when complaints are received, to check compliance with health regulations. A restaurant or food-retail buyer can read the written results as part of diligence. Read it alongside the wider checks in restaurant licences and transfers.
Where the reports come from
Vancouver Coastal Health says each visit generates a report given to the operator, either confirming compliance or listing deficiencies, and it lets the public look reports up. Peel Public Health in Ontario publishes inspection results for retail food businesses. In Ontario, the Food Premises regulation also requires an operator to ensure inspection results are posted as the inspector requests. Health authorities in other provinces and regions run their own systems; ask the local authority whether and where it publishes results.
What to check or ask
- Search the local health authority’s public records for the premises.
- Ask the seller for the most recent reports and what was done about each deficiency.
- Ask whether any follow-up inspection or order is open.
