Vehicle-for-hire licence (ride-hailing)

A buyer of a limousine, shuttle, taxi or ride-hail operator meets this term because the business can only lawfully carry passengers for pay while it holds the right authorization. This entry covers British Columbia and Quebec; check the rules where you are.

British Columbia

The Passenger Transportation Board states that, under the Act, it may approve transfer applications if it considers that the applicant is a fit and proper person and capable of providing a service. It also states that a transfer application is not required when there is an ownership change within a corporation, such as a change of shareholders, and that requirements may be streamlined when the principals of transferor and transferee are the same or mostly the same. Quebec

The Act respecting remunerated passenger transportation by automobile provides that the owner of a qualified automobile may not transfer it unless the owner obtains the cancellation of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec’s authorization for that automobile or, as the case may be, the striking off of the owner’s registration with a transportation system operator. The Commission des transports du Québec keeps a public register of those operators.
