Can I buy an auto repair shop if I’m not a mechanic?

Many people own repair shops without working on cars, but the shop then depends on its lead technician and on your skill at the front counter. Learn to judge quality through comebacks and customer feedback, plan a long handover with the seller, and ask your lawyer what the shop’s work requires of the people doing it.

A shop owner who cannot diagnose a car still has a full-time job. The work is running the front counter, keeping the schedule honest, managing people and watching the numbers. What changes is the risk. You rely on others for the part of the business that customers value most, so you need to know how you will check it.

What the owner does all day

Expect to greet customers, write or review estimates, approve work, order parts, handle complaints and keep the books moving. Service writing and customer care are part of the job. If you enjoy that work, the role may suit you. If you would rather stay out of the shop, a manager may be needed.

Depending on a lead technician

Your lead technician may carry the shop’s reputation and its standard of work. Meet that person early, with the seller’s consent, and ask what they need to stay. Keeping technicians after a purchase covers that in more depth. Have a plan for the day the technician leaves.

Checking quality without being a technician

Watch comebacks, which are cars returning for the same problem. Read reviews, ask the seller how complaints are handled, and consider having a trusted outside mechanic look at the shop’s work. Look at how repair orders are written up. Clear notes usually point to a careful shop.

Structuring the handover

Ask the seller to stay on for a defined period to introduce you to customers, suppliers and staff. Write down what the seller will do and for how long. Ask your lawyer which rules apply to the shop and its staff, and what the purchase needs to cover.
