Can I buy an existing Etsy shop?

You can buy the business behind a storefront, but not the Etsy account itself: Etsy’s help pages say accounts cannot be transferred, even when the business is sold, and the new owner must open a new account and shop. Plan around what can move: brand, designs, supplier arrangements, customer list, social channels and stock.

Many people searching for an Etsy shop to buy picture a storefront they can take over and keep running. The shop is a page on someone else’s platform, and what you are paying for may sit in what stands behind it. Before you talk price or terms, work out what you are actually acquiring and which parts of it you can count on holding after closing.

The account stays with the seller

Whether an Etsy account can be transferred is set by the platform’s own terms, not by the seller and buyer agreeing between themselves. Etsy’s help page says an account cannot be transferred to someone who buys the business, that the buyer must register a new account and open a new shop, and that an account it believes was transferred may be suspended. It also says a shop name can be registered only once, so the new shop needs a different name on Etsy. Read the current terms before you agree a price, and do not pay for the account, its reviews or its sales count.

What you can usually buy

The assets that sit outside the platform are the ones you can plan around. Ask the seller to list each one and confirm who owns it. Then ask how the business would run without the shop name on the platform, because that is the test of what you are paying for.

  • The brand name, logo and any registered marks
  • Product designs, photos and listing copy, with proof the seller owns them
  • Supplier and production arrangements, and any contracts behind them
  • The email list, social accounts and repeat-customer records
  • Stock on hand, and the equipment or tools used to make it

Check the sales history yourself

Ask for the shop’s order and payout reports, returns and refunds, and the costs of materials, shipping and platform fees. Compare them with the bank deposits and the tax filings. Look for what drives sales: one hit product, a trend, advertising spend, or the seller’s own daily effort. Your accountant can help you judge how reliable the figures are.
