Can I sell my business on Facebook Marketplace?

Facebook Marketplace is a poor fit for selling a business. Meta says it is intended for consumer-to-consumer sales, that commerce content may not promote buying or selling services, and that listings breaking its policies may be removed. BDC also warns that, depending on a listing site’s confidentiality procedures, word could get out that you are selling.

You can post almost anything in a consumer marketplace, but that does not mean the platform allows it or that it suits the sale. A business sale involves financial records, contracts, leases and licences, and Facebook Marketplace is built for something else. Before you spend time on a listing, read what Meta says the service is for, what it can do to a post that does not fit, and what a public post could cost you.

What Meta says Marketplace is for

Meta’s Commerce Policies describe commerce content as any attempt to buy, sell or trade products on services such as Facebook Marketplace. They say Facebook Marketplace is intended for consumer-to-consumer sales. They also say commerce content may not promote the buying, selling or trading of services, except on the WhatsApp Business app or through Appointments in Facebook or Instagram. The policy does not say how a reviewer would treat a whole business, so read the current wording before you rely on any reading of it.

What can happen to a listing

Meta says that failing to comply with its policies or the law may result in rejection or removal of listings and other content. It may also lead to suspension or termination of access to its commerce services. If your content is removed and you think that was a mistake, the policy describes a way to request a review. Losing access to the account you use for a listing is a cost to weigh, especially if the same account is tied to your business’s customers.

Accuracy and confidentiality

The Competition Bureau says it is against the law under the Competition Act to advertise or market something in a way that is false or misleading. Any listing that describes your revenue, customers or equipment should be accurate and be something you can back up. Confidentiality is a separate risk. BDC notes that, if you list on a business-for-sale website, depending on the site’s confidentiality procedures, word could get out to employees, customers or suppliers that you are selling. Before you post anywhere, ask what the platform does to screen who sees a listing and what you would be able to withhold until a buyer signs a non-disclosure agreement.
