Can an online calculator tell me what my pet store is worth?

A calculator can start a conversation, but it cannot see what a pet store buyer will look at: how old the stock is, whether live animals are involved, what grooming or self-wash adds, which supplier programs you hold and how much rests on you. Gather your records first and let a qualified adviser do the valuing.

Online calculators ask for a few numbers and return one answer. That is tidy, and it is also the problem. A pet store has several moving parts that a short form cannot capture, and a buyer will go looking for every one of them. Use a calculator, if you like, as a prompt for questions. Do not treat what it returns as a conclusion.

Stock is more than a total

A form asks for inventory as one line. A buyer wants to know what is on the shelf, what it cost you and how long it has sat. Food and treats carry dates, and some stock will not move. Count it properly before you talk to anyone, and expect a buyer to want a count of their own at the handover.

Animals and add-on services

If you keep live animals, the way you source and care for them is part of what a buyer examines. Grooming or self-wash services add earnings and also add staff and equipment. Our answer on what to check before buying a pet grooming business shows how a buyer looks at that side.

Programs and your own role

Supplier terms, loyalty programs and local relationships may or may not carry over to a new owner. Read what happens to rebates and loyalty programs when a retail store is bought and ask your suppliers early. Buyers also ask how much customers come back for you personally.

What to gather instead

  • A dated stock count, separating live animals, food, supplies and anything slow-moving.
  • Sales split by product line and by service.
  • Supplier agreements and any program terms in writing.
  • A plain description of the week you work and who covers it.
