Can you buy an Orangetheory franchise in Canada?
Yes, in select markets. Orangetheory Fitness Canada says licences are available only in some markets and wants candidates with entrepreneurial experience and liquid capital. Its Canadian franchising page gives no cost figures, so ask the franchisor for them.
Orangetheory Fitness franchises studios in Canada, but it does not publish a price on its Canadian franchising page. That page says the brand is rapidly growing across Canada, with licences available in select markets, and it reports 115+ locations across Canada. Whether a market near you is open is a question for the franchisor.
What Orangetheory says it looks for
The page headed “Franchising Candidate Requirements” says Orangetheory wants only serious candidates interested in becoming stakeholders in the brand. It says candidates must be able to provide required capital and dedicated studio management support, and it lists individual or group investors with solid entrepreneur experience, an owner/operator who engages with the team daily, and access to liquid capital to qualify for a Canadian small business loan (it names the CSBFL) or other loans. It says it attracts master franchisees and area developers with skills ranging from leadership to retail, operations, sales and finance.
What the page does not tell you
The Canadian franchising page does not state an investment range, franchise fee, royalty or net-worth requirement. This page therefore gives none, and third-party directories should not stand in for the franchisor. Ask Orangetheory for the figures that apply in your province, and for the disclosure document it provides in your province.
Disclosure and an existing studio
The Canadian Franchise Association says franchise disclosure is regulated at the provincial level rather than through a single national law. In Ontario, the Arthur Wishart Act requires the prospective franchisee to receive the disclosure document not less than 14 days before the earlier of signing an agreement relating to the franchise and paying consideration for it, subject to the exemptions in s.5(7). If you want an existing studio rather than a new licence, you would be buying someone else’s franchise, so read Who has to approve a franchise resale? and ask the franchisor what it requires of a buyer.
