How can I check whether a health food store is profitable before buying?
Check the sales mix (supplements, groceries, bulk, drinks), how much stock is slow or near its date, how many customers come back, how online sellers affect the shelves, and how much of the store’s success rests on the owner’s product knowledge. Ask your accountant to test the records against these answers.
A health food store can look healthy on paper and still depend on things that will not carry over to a new owner. Profit here comes from a mix of product lines, each with its own habits, and from a loyal group of customers who trust the person at the counter. The checks below are questions to take to your accountant about which parts of the result depend on the seller.
The sales mix
Ask for sales by category: vitamins and supplements, packaged groceries, bulk bins, refrigerated items, body care and prepared food. Ask how each has moved over recent years and which ones bring customers through the door. A store that leans on one line is more exposed than one with several steady lines. Compare what the owner says with what the records show.
Stock that is slow or near its date
Supplements and natural foods carry dates, and old stock is money sitting on the shelf. Walk the store with the seller and look at dates, dusty boxes and heavy discounting. Ask how stock is counted and how expired goods were handled in the books. Our page on stock counts in a pet store sale shows how a count at closing works in a similar shop.
Customers, competition and the owner
Ask how many customers are regulars, whether there is a loyalty list, and how online sellers and larger grocers have affected the shelves. Find out what the owner knows that customers rely on, such as advice on products, and whether staff can offer the same. If the owner’s knowledge is the draw, plan for a handover period.
