How can I tell if a bike shop’s bike inventory is overstocked from last year?

Walk the floor and storeroom with the stock list and compare model years, frame sizes and colours against what sold last season. Slow movers, repeated markdowns and older models carried at full cost point to overstock. Ask how the shop values leftover stock and who decides.

Start with a stock list that shows what each item is, its model year, when it arrived and what it cost. Match it to the floor. Older models, unusual sizes and last year’s colours tend to linger. Ask which items have been on sale already and how much movement there was.

Look at turnover by category. Complete bikes, e-bikes, parts and accessories sell differently, and one slow group can hide behind fast ones. Ask for sales by group over the past year alongside stock levels. If a group has plenty of stock but few sales, a clearance may be needed, which affects margins and cash.

Then check the books. Does the accounting carry old bikes at their original cost, even if they now sell for less? Ask your accountant how to treat this when you set the terms. Ask about stock on consignment, supplier return options and whether a physical count will be done at closing. Borrowing against stock raises its own questions, so ask whether any is pledged. If the overstock is real, ask whether the seller will adjust terms or clear it before closing, and agree how the proceeds are handled.

Key takeaways

  • Compare model years, sizes and colours with what actually sold last season.
  • Look at turnover by product group, not just the total.
  • Insist on a physical count at closing and ask how old stock is carried in the books.
