How can I tell if a packaged ice business is profitable before I buy it?
To judge whether a packaged ice business is profitable, read several years of statements side by side, because weather moves ice sales. Compare bags produced with bags invoiced, check power, water, fuel and route costs by season, and find out how much peak-week work the owner does without pay.
Ice is a weather business. A hot summer fills the freezers and a cool one leaves the plant half idle, so one year of statements can mislead you in either direction. This page is about reading the earnings. The checklist for machines, freezers and food safety records is a separate page, linked below. Ask for as many years as the seller can provide.
Hot years against cool years
Lay the years next to each other and ask what the weather was like in each. A strong year may say more about the summer than the business. Ask for monthly sales, not just annual totals, so you can see how sharp the peaks are. Then ask what the owner does in a cool summer to keep costs down, and whether those steps would still work for you.
Bags made, bags invoiced
The plant may log how many bags it produced, while the books show how many were invoiced. The gap can come from giveaways, spoilage, breakage, returns or bags that melted before delivery. Ask to see both records and how the seller explains the difference. If production records are thin or the two do not match, that is a question for your accountant.
Operating costs and the owner’s own time
Power and water are major costs for an ice maker and they follow the seasons, so ask for bills month by month. Add fuel, vehicle upkeep and driver time for the routes. Look at retailer pricing and how often stores return product. Then ask who fills in during the busiest weeks. If the owner works long unpaid shifts, you will need to hire or do that work yourself.
