How can I tell if a pet store is profitable before I buy it?
Tell whether a pet store is profitable by looking below total sales. Compare margin by category, such as food, accessories, grooming and any live animals. Check how many customers reorder food and use autoship, how much stock is lost or expires, and what terms suppliers give. Ask for category reports, not only a summary.
A pet store sells very different things under one roof, and they earn very differently. A summary that adds everything together can hide a store carried by one category or dragged down by another. Ask for records that break the business apart, and read them next to the guide to buying a pet supply store.
Margin by category
Ask the seller for sales and cost of goods for each category: food, treats, toys and accessories, grooming, and live animals if the store sells them. Food often brings steady traffic at thin margins, while accessories can earn more per sale but sell less often. Live animals add care costs and loss risk. See which category really carries the store.
Repeat customers and autoship
Pet food is bought again and again, so look at how many customers return for it and whether the store runs a loyalty or autoship program. Ask whether those customer records transfer, and read the question about supplier rebates and loyalty programs.
Shrink and expired stock
Stock that is stolen, damaged, past its date or simply slow takes money out of the till. Ask how the store tracks losses and markdowns, when it last did a full count and what it does with expired food and medications. Walk the shelves and look at the dates yourself.
Supplier terms
Review payment terms, minimum orders, return rights and any rebates from main suppliers. Better terms improve cash flow, and the store may rely on a few vendors. Ask whether those terms stay in place for a new owner.
