Where should I list my pet store for sale?
List a pet store where its likely buyers look: business-for-sale sites, a broker who handles retail, and trusted contacts approached quietly. Word the listing by city and type of shop but leave out the name, so customers and staff do not learn of the sale before you tell them.
Where you list depends on who is likely to buy and how much quiet you need. A pet store depends on regulars and a small team, and either group can be unsettled by early news. Choose your channels with that in mind. This page is about advertising the sale. The steps of the sale itself are in our selling guide.
Who tends to buy a pet store
Common buyers include your own staff, owners of nearby grooming or training businesses, other independent pet stores, and first-time buyers who like a franchise-style structure. Each looks in a different place and wants different information. Think about which of them you would like to hear from, and which you would rather not.
Listing site, broker or quiet approach
A listing site reaches many people at low effort. A broker adds screening, confidentiality and negotiation, and works for you under an agreement your lawyer should read. A quiet approach to a few likely buyers keeps the news contained but reaches fewer people. Many sellers use two of the three.
Wording the listing
Buyers search by city, so name the city or area and the type of shop. Leave out the store name, the street and anything customers would recognise. Describe the shop in plain terms, including whether it sells live animals. Ask serious inquirers to sign a confidentiality agreement before you share names or records.
Have these ready for inquiries
Prepare your financial statements, the lease, a list of equipment and a short account of how the shop runs. Decide who answers inquiries and what you will say to staff if asked. The guide to selling a pet supply store covers what comes after a buyer appears.
