How do I find a camera store for sale?
Independent camera shops are few and rarely advertised, so search under several names, ask brand reps, repair and rental houses, photography clubs, schools and print labs who may be retiring, and approach owners directly and privately. Some stores also have a rental or repair arm.
There are not many independent camera stores, and the ones that exist seldom appear on a for-sale site. Owners may be well known locally, so keep conversations discreet. A search therefore takes patience and a bit of networking. Searching for cameras near you will mostly show shopping results, so aim your effort at the business itself.
Search under the right names
Try camera shop, photo store, photo and video retailer, used camera dealer and camera and imaging store. Run each on business-for-sale sites and broker pages. Also look for a related trade: a rental house, a repair centre or a print lab that happens to sell equipment. Results aimed at shoppers, such as lists of places that buy used cameras, are not listings, so skip them.
Who knows of a retiring owner
Brand representatives and distributors visit camera shops regularly and can tell when an owner is thinking about the next step. Repair and rental houses, photography clubs, schools with photography programs and print labs also know the owners. Be clear about who you are and what you want. Offer your details and let them pass the message on, so nobody’s plans are made public before they are ready.
Make a direct approach
Visit as a customer first. Notice the staff, the used cabinet, the rental shelf and the mix of customers. Then ask the owner for a private conversation, say what you have in mind, and offer a confidentiality agreement before any records change hands. Respect a no. Plans change, so stay courteous.
Consider a store with a rental or repair arm
A store whose rentals, repairs or printing carry much of the work is a different kind of store from a pure retailer. Once you find one, what to check before buying a camera store lists the questions to ask.
