How do I find a lavender farm for sale in Canada?
Lavender farms are few and often sold as rural property, so search farm and acreage listings as well as business listings, ask growers and agritourism contacts, and approach owners directly. Read each listing for the product line, the online store, the events and the brand, not only the land.
There are not many lavender farms, and the owners rarely advertise them as businesses. Some are sold through a rural real estate agent. If you want the business, you have to look in more than one place and read between the lines of what is offered.
Where to look
Search business-for-sale sites under lavender, herb farm, agritourism and farm retail, and check rural property listings under hobby farm and acreage with a business. Set alerts for each. Ask herb and flower growers, farmers’ market organizers and farm-supply dealers whether they know of an owner ready to step back. Some sales happen between people who already know of each other.
Reading a listing for business versus land
Ask what is sold besides the soil. A real business has a product line, such as oil, sachets, soaps and culinary goods, plus a website and online store, a brand, a customer list, and sometimes distillation equipment and a shop. Ask whether events or workshops bring in visitors. If the listing mentions none of this, ask whether it exists or was left out.
Visiting in bloom and out of it
See the farm once in bloom, as a visitor, when the crowds and the staff are at work. Visit again when the plants are bare or cut back, with the owner, to look at the rows, the drying and processing space and the storage. A farm that looks wonderful for a few weeks may look very different in the weeks that matter for your planning.
Approaching an owner directly
A short, private note works best: who you are, what you hope to do with a farm like theirs and how to reach you. Do not ask for numbers in the first message. Offer to talk in the off-season, and be ready to explain how you would keep what visitors love. Our page on what to check before buying a lavender farm follows once you have a candidate.
