How do I find a security company for sale near me?

Decide first which kind of security business you want: guarding, alarm installation or alarm monitoring. Then look through listing sites and brokers, ask the central stations and equipment distributors that know the dealers, and approach owners confidentially. On a first call, ask about contracts, accounts and who holds the customer relationships.

“Security company” covers businesses that have little in common. Some staff sites with guards, some install alarms and cameras, and some monitor signals for other dealers. Each one earns money differently and carries different obligations. If you search before you choose, you will spend your time on listings that do not fit. Decide which kind suits your skills and goals, then search for that kind.

The three kinds of business

A guarding company sells people’s time under contract. An alarm installer sells equipment and labour, and often keeps the customer on a service plan. A monitoring company watches signals and dispatches a response, usually on a recurring basis. Think about whether you want to manage a large staff, run technicians in the field, or hold a book of subscribers. Your answer narrows the search.

Where they come up for sale

Listing sites, including Deavo, show the businesses that are openly offered. Brokers hold others privately, so tell them which kind you want. Central stations and equipment distributors deal with dealers every week and often know who wants to step back. Some owners sell an account book rather than the whole company, so ask whether that is on offer.

Approaching owners confidentially

Security owners are careful by habit, and they have good reason to be: clients and staff should not hear of a sale by rumour. Introduce yourself briefly, say what you are looking for and promise confidentiality. Expect to sign a confidentiality agreement before you see any detail. The BDC note on confidentiality agreements sets out what one usually covers.

What to ask on the first call

  • Which contracts or subscriber accounts bring in the revenue, and how long do they run?
  • Can customer contracts move to a new owner, and on what terms?
  • Who holds the relationships: the owner, a manager or the staff?
  • Which trained or licensed people does the business depend on?

Licensing is a legal question, so do not guess. The answer on whether a guard agency licence transfers is a starting point, and your lawyer can tell you what applies. Once you have a candidate, use what to check before buying a security services company.
