How do I hand over my day spa to the new owner?

Once the deal is agreed, introduce the buyer to your therapists and regular guests, pass on treatment protocols and room set-up, hand over product-line and linen-service accounts, booking and gift-certificate and membership records, and agree how long you will stay on to help.

Getting ready to sell is one job. Handing the spa over once the deal is agreed is another, and it is where guests and staff decide how they feel about the change. A calm, well-planned handover protects the experience you built. Plan it with the buyer in writing, and ask your lawyer to make sure it matches the terms of the sale.

Introduce the buyer to people

Decide with the buyer when and how your team will hear the news, and tell them before guests do. Then bring the buyer into the rooms. Introduce them to each therapist and esthetician, and in person to your regular guests. Our page on keeping stylists when a hair salon is sold covers the staff side.

Pass on protocols and set-up

Write down how each treatment is done and how each room is prepared, including music, temperature, products and the order of steps. If the spa has a signature routine, record it in detail. These small things are the experience guests return for, and your team will welcome a buyer who respects them.

Hand over accounts and records

  • Product-line and supplier accounts, with contacts and ordering habits
  • The linen and laundry service arrangement
  • Booking system access and guest history
  • Gift certificate, package and membership records, with outstanding balances

Agree how long you will stay on

Be specific about the days or weeks you will be available, what you will do in them and how the buyer can reach you afterward. Some sellers work alongside the buyer at first, then step back. Put the plan on paper so both sides know what to expect.
