How do I judge the reliability of a fleet shop’s on-call technicians?

Ask who is on call, how the rota works, how often they are called out and how they are paid for it. Look at whether the same few people cover most of the nights, and whether any have said they will leave. Reliability shows in response records and in how staff talk about the arrangement.

Ask for the on-call schedule for a representative stretch and see who actually covered it. If one or two people carry it, the shop is fragile, no matter how good they are. Ask what happens when one is sick or on holiday. Ask how the shop handles a serious breakdown at night. A calm, practised answer suggests the system has been tested, while a vague one suggests the last emergency was solved by the owner and not by process.

Then ask about the call-outs themselves. How often does the phone ring after hours, how fast does someone respond and how many calls turn into billable work? Records of response times, where they exist, are better than anyone’s memory.

Speak with the technicians themselves, if the seller allows it. Ask how they feel about the rota, how it is paid and whether they plan to stay. Listen for tiredness and for any quiet resentment, because those problems tend to end with someone quitting. Look at the arrangements in writing: pay for standby time, vehicle use at home and agreements with the fleet customers. Your lawyer can review the employment terms before you commit.

Key takeaways

  • Review who actually covered the on-call schedule, not just who is listed.
  • Ask for response records instead of relying on memory.
  • Talk to the technicians about the rota and whether they plan to stay.
