How do I sell my marketing agency when clients hire it for my own work?

Begin well before listing by moving client relationships and creative leadership to your staff, writing down how you do your work, and offering a transition period the buyer can rely on. A buyer is more comfortable when clients already work happily with someone other than you.

When clients hire an agency because of the owner, a buyer sees the owner as the product. That is a common worry for sellers of small agencies, and it can be reduced with time. The full path is in selling a marketing agency in Canada. This page covers only the owner-role problem.

Move relationships to your team

Pick the clients that matter most and introduce a senior team member as their day-to-day contact. Sit in at first, then step back. Over some months, notice whether clients still come to you or go to your colleague. Record what happens. A buyer will want to see that the client is comfortable without you in the room.

Hand over the creative lead

If you set the creative direction, let someone else lead on some projects and take the credit. Write down how you review work, what you look for and how you brief the team. This turns your judgement into something the next owner can follow. Without it, the buyer has to rebuild your role from scratch or replace you.

Offer a transition the buyer can rely on

Be ready to stay for a period after closing, and be clear about what you will do: introductions, handing over accounts, training. Ask your lawyer how that period, and any promise not to compete or to approach your clients, can be set out. Buyers usually want terms in writing, not good intentions.

Before you list

  • Which clients would stay only if you stayed?
  • Who on your team is ready to take on more?
  • What is written down, and what lives only in your head?
