How do I sell a music store?

Prepare the shop before you tell buyers about it. Clear out or sort aged stock, write down the rental fleet and repair work, check that supplier dealer accounts can move to a new owner, and plan how lesson teachers and school band customers will stay through the handover.

Selling an instrument retailer goes better when the shop is ready to be read by a stranger. A buyer will look at the stock, the rentals, the repair bench and the people who bring the business in. If these are neat and written down, the buyer can see what is there. If they live only in your head, the buyer will have to guess, and guessing usually lowers confidence.

Tidy the stock

Go through the floor and the back room. Separate stock you own from consigned pieces, and mark anything that has sat for a long time. Decide what to clear, what to keep and what to explain. A buyer who finds aged stock on their own will ask more questions than one who was told up front. Your accountant can help you present the inventory records clearly.

Document rentals, repairs and accounts

List every rental instrument, who holds it and under what agreement. Record how the repair bench runs and who does the work. Contact your main suppliers to learn whether the dealer accounts can move to a new owner, and ask your lawyer to read any contract that limits transfer. Having this ready shortens the buyer’s review and keeps the sale on schedule.

Keep teachers and school customers through the handover

Lesson teachers and school band directors send much of the shop’s business, and they follow people they trust. Plan how you will introduce the buyer to them, and how long you can stay on to help. Consider offering a transition period. Keep your plans confidential until you and the buyer agree on how and when to tell staff and customers.
