How do I tell if a robotics club’s income depends on one grant?
Ask for the club’s income broken down by source, then see how much comes from a single grant. If one funder covers most of the revenue, ask what happens when that grant ends or is not renewed. Compare against fees, sponsors and donations to judge the spread.
Request the income statement and, more usefully, a line-by-line list of every revenue source across the last several periods. Group the lines into grants, member fees, sponsorships, competition revenue and anything else. Notice which single line is largest, and whether it keeps growing or quietly shrinks from period to period.
Then read the grant paperwork itself. Ask what the funds may be spent on, whether the award is tied to the current owner or to the organization, and whether it can transfer to a buyer at all. Some funding follows the people who applied for it, and a sale can end it overnight. Ask the funder directly, with the seller’s permission, how renewal decisions are made and who makes them.
Look next at what the club would do without it. If the grant paid wages, equipment or the space, ask how the programs would survive its loss, and whether fees could realistically rise. A club with several moderate sources is easier to run than one built on a single application. Finally, test the seller’s story against bank deposits and receipts, not only a summary page.
Key takeaways
- Split income by source and look closely at the single largest line.
- Ask whether the grant can transfer to a buyer, and when it is next reviewed.
- Test a realistic plan for running the club without that funding before you commit.
