Should I buy a burger franchise or an independent burger restaurant?
The choice turns on how much structure you want. A franchise brings a set menu, a required supply chain, ongoing fees, remodel duties and franchisor approval of you as buyer. An independent shop gives you your own recipes and suppliers but no brand behind it. Compare how each fits the way you want to work.
Both routes sell burgers, but they ask different things of you. A franchise resale hands you a system and holds you to it. An independent shop hands you a blank page, plus whatever the last owner built. Neither is better in general. The useful question is which set of trade-offs you can live with every day, starting with how much you want to decide yourself.
Menu and supply chain
A franchise usually fixes the menu and the approved suppliers. That saves you from developing recipes, and it limits what you can change. An independent shop lets you adjust the menu, switch suppliers and run specials, but you carry the weight of every choice. Ask yourself whether you want a playbook or the freedom to write your own.
Fees, remodels and approval
A franchise resale normally comes with ongoing fees to the franchisor and may require the location to be updated. Ask to see the franchise agreement and what it says about both. The franchisor often has to approve you before the sale closes, which adds a step and a wait. Your lawyer can explain the agreement. An independent shop has none of this, but also no brand to draw customers.
Weighing the two
List what you want from the first year: training, a known name, control of the menu, a short or long approval process. Match each to the option that gives it. This page on comparing franchise brands helps if you lean toward a franchise, and this one on buying a takeout-only restaurant helps if you lean toward independent.
