Should I buy a charcuterie board business or start one?

Both routes can work. A charcuterie business needs little equipment, so starting is easy to try. Buying gets you a brand, a following, booked events and relationships with venues and planners, but only if they transfer. Compare what is included in the sale with what you could build yourself.

Charcuterie and grazing businesses are unusual because starting one takes so little equipment. Boards, props, a way to deliver and a supplier or two will get you going. That makes the question less about money tied up in a shop and more about time, reputation and customers. Neither route is better in general. It helps to ask what you would actually be buying.

What starting asks of you

A new business begins with no photos, no reviews and no calendar. You will spend months building a feed, meeting planners and venues, and learning how to price your own time. The upside is that you shape it your own way and take on no one else’s habits. Ask yourself whether you can wait for bookings while you build a name.

What buying can give you

An existing business may bring a recognizable brand, a social following, booked events, supplier accounts and a place on the lists of venues and planners. These are the hardest items to move. Ask what transfers, whether the owner will introduce you, and whether the accounts and photos come with the sale. A following built around the founder’s face may not follow you.

Questions that decide it

  • Could you build the same brand yourself in the time a purchase would save you?
  • Is the kitchen arrangement something that transfers, or only the seller’s own set-up?
  • Will the owner stay for a handover so clients meet you?
  • Are the bookings real, written down and tied to the business?
